Usually, it involves making a copy of the SD card as a single image file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it sounds straightforward, copying your SD card&#8217;s contents as an image file is the opposite of OS flashing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While flashing unpacks the OS files and makes them compatible with the PI, this method packs everything into one image file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more? You can restore the files whenever you need the backup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can follow the next steps to learn how to create a complete SD card backup image:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>First, switch off the PI and take out the SD card. Also, remember to place it in a card reader or adapter before plugging it into your PC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Linux or Mac, open the terminal window and input. Then, examine the drives that pop up.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: If it doesn\u2019t detect your SD card, try unplugging and replugging it till it shows on the screen. Then, input the above command again.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Next, you should see a freshly mounted drive. For instance, Linux systems will show \/dev\/sda, while MAC models may be\u00a0 \/dev\/rdisk2. Again, remember that the names may vary so ensure you check carefully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a Linux system, use the following command:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/zTdeQelor744GXRUIh37qlqMg1wgnZrdR_S8kxPa-G5Ubp0cTdLty8lpemLbJH8e9j1APsJ4brg-ALH741ZtYsYeqRGhZP8u5dFxxUabRIlCn6yL4STOZR0yWunarpAwYkVLmNFKN_YVOXns9Fj_qQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"for-mac-type-the-command-below\">For MAC, type the command below:<\/h4>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/BdHRuBDGhOswhX80vQrG61sXCpXn3tCKTLuAsKWhZqZBvKovM_sDzl462gdW_u3B8RBZfSeQQ7SEbXqLrj2OE-MtkSTf5D-SYvwH5IVVBob3JQBnb8Sz9rfjiqx8WxKJrIFuFDL7fqQYj5SayE8unA\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These codes will create an exact copy of your SD card\u2019s image file, allowing you to restore your corrupted operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: You can restore the backup image file using the dd command in reverse or relying on tools like Etcher to complete the flashing process.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Use the Win32 Disk Imager software to back up your SD card for Windows. All you have to do is download, install, and launch the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, click Yes on the security alert dialog box and select the device at the top right corner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, input <strong><em>C:\/rasberryexpert.img<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in the Image File text box and select Read (You can use any name you prefer).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It should start the process and write the entire SD card into an image file. If it shows \u201cRead Successful,\u201d your backup is complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"method-2-zip-the-home-directory\">Method 2: Zip the Home Directory<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Although the first method is easy, it has a significant flip side: the need to create frequent backups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the process will require constantly removing the SD from your PI and inserting it into your PC and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this second method eliminates the repetitive process, allowing you to back up your Raspberry PI OS without removing the SD Card. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, it involves backing up the home folder as a compressed file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And extracting the compressed file allows you to restore every backed-up directory. Here\u2019s the command you need for this method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/bxKZExAKz2sBTOe8jTk9NRwfvhtWCfrHKAa2N2W5TzZtx2ENqWD9_MCyYvn_x_GQbg4XkriYnK6IW68fXEwLPiENI9J8bpDIjJaBQ7rUBg1-9C6kaqIuFXEtn8N34PDrB2V9a72ekxhF4bz2MlSTFQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The code will create a file titled \u201c<strong>pi_home.tar.gz.<\/strong>&#8221; Also, you can copy it to any external storage device to make even more backups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Method two is the go-to for backing up your Raspberry PI while active.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"method-3-scheduled-backups\">Method 3: Scheduled Backups<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>What if you don\u2019t want to do the backup yourself? Thankfully, you can set up an automatic process with this method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part is it&#8217;s also an easy process. You can use the free Deja Dup software to schedule your backups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can use the manual route by setting the tar command as a cron job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we recommend using the program because it creates backups over remote networks and sends them to cloud storage with FTP, Google Drive, SSH, or Amazon S3. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, you can copy the files to external storage devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the program allows you to choose folders you want to back up, making them easy to restore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deja Dup comes pre-installed on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ubuntu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ubuntu <\/a>OS, but you can easily install it on Raspberry PI OS with the following commands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ddd_rFsL4SqxOLmhVcGOzapRoZ70RrGQAN6kihFCrZuYlB_OX6xxDklf4HpEzx2SDRWK9aoY1wHUjvOODB5fsPHWkWl7WGxgCHirRmuV2qMDMu1e3vTrKDgnRwk_iH0W_hUYj2yTCcdw-2KNl7nTXQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After issuing the commands, open a program titled \u201cBackups.\u201d You can find it by navigating to Menu &gt; Accessories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, select the folders you want to save and change the storage location from Amazon S3 to your external storage (unless you want cloud backup).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Select \u201cHome (PI)\u201d before creating the backup. And you can exclude the rubbish bin directory.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first backup, you can easily set the time for the next automatic one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, change the \u201cOFF\u201d option to \u201cON\u201d and select \u201cScheduling\u201d to choose your preferred frequency (daily or weekly).<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wrapping-up\">Wrapping Up<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Data loss can result from total system failure or data wipeout. In such cases, you can quickly restore the backup files from the above methods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All it takes is to plug your external storage into the PI and navigate to &#8220;Backups.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, choose &#8220;Restore&#8221; to reinstall any missing folders and files before selecting your flash drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, examine all your backup options and choose your preferred date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Afterward, you can return everything to its default location or place it in a new folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have more questions?
